Anthony BACKHOUSE

This season (2017-2018) is the first season Backhouse has officiated in the Football League after being promoted at the end of last season which culminated in him officiating the National League Play-Off final between Tranmere Rovers and winners Forest Green Rovers.

Promotion to Level 1 National List of Referees made Backhouse the first Cumberland official in over 40 years to be added to the EFL list, whilst he also becomes the youngest ever from the county alongside being the youngest on the 2017/18 National List of Referees.

The 26-year-old has plans to make it to the top but he hasn’t achieved his target of the Premier League. He had aimed to make it to that level by the time he was 26!

Backhouse started his refereeing at the age of 14 and has taken charge of county finals and became one of the youngest officials to take charge at Wembley in that National League Play-Off final.

Backhouse was delighted to receive the news on his promotion as he said: “I was overwhelmed when I received the phone call informing me I had been promoted to the top level.

“Those who are close to me understand the huge amount I have sacrificed and compromised in order to achieve this level, so I’m just relieved that my hard work and dedication has paid off. I’ll enjoy the summer break, but will be training hard to ensure I’m fully prepared for the start of the 2017/18 season.

“Officiating at Wembley was a fantastic experience, but this news is icing on the cake. Once again, I would like to thank all those who have supported and guided me through my career so far, especially my family.”

John BUSBY

Of the six officials that were promoted last May [2016], Posh have had the pleasure of four of them already with Busby being the fifth on Saturday! Posh have lost two of the four matches officiated by the rookies while winning just once; that came in the first round of the EFL Cup as they overcame a determined AFC Wimbledon side to win 3-2.

Busby has been active with ‘whistle and flag’ for over twelve years before being fast tracked into the EFL following just one season in the Football Conference National!

Even though Busby has made a quick rise into the Football League, he has been involved in a number of prestigious games including County Cup finals, Senior Cup final, FA Vase semi-final, and FA Trophy quarter finals to name just a few.

Oxfordshire FA’s head of Referee Development, Nigel Saverton, praised Busby on his appointment by saying: “It is a reflection on the high level of performance the referee has given during this season and previously for an outstanding achievement that recognises all the work John has done. We wish John all the best”.

Last season Busby was appointed as Fourth Official for the televised second leg of the FA Youth Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. He was also the Fourth Official during the International Champions Cup in August between Liverpool and Barcelona at Wembley Stadium.

The Sunderland Referees Association interviewed Geoff Eltringham a few seasons ago which gives a little insight into the whistle blower:

How where you introduced into refereeing?
After finishing playing school football, I didn’t think I would be good enough to make the step up and play at a decent standard, so I therefore chose to go down the refereeing route. I took my course at Ryhope Cricket Club under the leadership of Dave Binsley.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?
Lots of highlights such as officiating at Wembley, but promotion to the national list of referees was my overall highlight.

A target of mine when I first started refereeing was to be involved in Football League Football to some degree, so when I achieved it, it was very special.

I believe it is the low points that happen during your career, and how you deal and overcome them showing strength of character that ultimately makes you a stronger and better referee. Every referee will encounter low points from time to time.

What is the biggest game you have officiated and why?
My biggest game to date would be refereeing Nottingham Forest v Leicester City 2011/12, it was FA Cup 3rd round which gave the game a special feel. The game finished 0-0 with no major talking points which I was happy with.

What are your aims and ambitions as a referee?
My aim is to firstly retain my position then establish myself on the National List, which I feel after 3 seasons I’m starting to achieve.

My main ambition now is to referee at the highest level which would be the Premier League.

What/Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why?
Lots of people have had a big influence on my career, Malcolm Langley offered me the best piece of advice to ditch my beloved Sunderland season ticket, gutted at the time but I think it was the right choice!! At grassroots level I had good mentors in Ron Bates and Dick Madden. I have also worked with some great coaches on my way up the refereeing ladder including Phil Prosser, Matt Mattias and Alan Kaye, I’m currently working with Alan Wiley and Gary Willard who have been a great help with my development.

In your opinion who is/was the best referee?
The best I’ve worked with are both current in Michael Oliver & Mark Clattenburg, but the referee who I used to look out for and admire was Paul Durkin, I thought he was a class act, maybe because we are similar heights!!!!

Married with four daughters, Haywood began refereeing in 1993 in West Yorkshire. He decided to become a referee after being challenged by a work colleague who was already a match official and afterwards said: ‘I took the course and learnt more in six weeks than I had seen in 28 years as a fan.’

Haywood rose through the West Yorkshire and Northern Premier Leagues to reach the national list of assistant referees in 2002. In 2006, Haywood was promoted into the national list of referees and he has since refereed both the FA Vase and FA Trophy Quarter-Finals, and the 2010 Unibond League Final.

In 2015, Haywood was in charge of the League One play-off match between Chesterfield and Preston North End. The Lilywhites won one-nil thanks to a James Beckford sixth minute goal.

Brett Huxtable

Referee Brett Huxtable from Devon

So who is Brett Huxtable?

Promoted to a level one referee in May 2016.

Huxtable is a 31-year-old self-employed builder from Devon but he has set his sights on becoming a full-time referee. He was promoted to a level-one referee earlier in the year and is aiming for the Premier League as he said to the North Devon Journal: “I want to settle in my first season [in League One and Two] but I want to become a full-time referee,”

“I am level one, but to referee in the Championship you have to be level one select group two. The Premier League is select group one – so I am two away from the Premier League.

“That is the plan [to get to the Premier League] if everything goes well. When you start refereeing the ambition is to go as high as you can.

“I don’t want to stay at this level, I don’t want to stop – I want to go as far as I can.”

To judge whether Huxtable was Football League material, he had to attend an all-day interview at Warwick University at the end of May. That included fitness tests, role-playing on how to deal with managers after a game, assessing the relationship with assistants and knowledge of football rules.

Speaking about the interview process, Huxtable said: “Bearing in mind I have never had an interview before – being a self-employed builder – I thought it went well.

“I got a bit nervous at one stage but composed myself and I was fine. I planned to go there and be the best I could, I didn’t want to come away wishing I had said this or done that.

“I had a phone call and they congratulated me on my interview and said they were pleased to inform me I was part of the list.

“I have been fortunate enough to go to some great grounds already but it will be different being the man in charge. As a referee you look forward to every game, I can’t say I am looking forward to going here or there – wherever you are every game is just as important to that club.

“The prospect of making a 740-mile, 12-hour round trip to officiate at Carlisle on a Tuesday night could take the shine off the promotion.

“I don’t think the public or footballers understand the amount of commitment involved. My nearest meeting will be in Reading – it is not as though it is Bideford or Barnstaple – it will be a two-hour drive minimum.

“A lot of people just think you turn up and ruin people’s games but it is not like that – it is a massive commitment.”

Skybet; League One;EFL;
Doncaster Rovers 0 v 0 Peterborough
02/9/2017;Keepmoat Stadium ;
Rovers’ Jordan Houghton has a shot at goal

As at 2014-2015: Graham Salisbury is an experienced referee and is in his fourteenth season as a Football League referee but he did originally suffer the disappointment of failing to earn promotion to a Football League referee from a Football League assistant. That disappointment didn`t stop him from achieving his goal as he passed at the second attempt.

Since then, Salisbury has been the assistant referee at the 2001 FA Vase Final, in which Taunton Town defeated Berkhamsted Town 2-1 at Villa Park. He has also refereed a final at Wembley – the 2011 Johnstone`s Paint Trophy Final between Brentford and Carlisle United.

That match wasn`t without controversy as he sent a player off, which is not what referees want to do especially in a final. The decision didn`t affect the result as Carlisle were already winning 1-0 and there were only three minutes left of the match. The player sent off was former Posh midfielder Toumani “Dave” Diagourago who received his second yellow card for a mistimed challenge. The sending off was the first time in the competitions history that a player has been sent off in the final!

A little while ago Tierney was interviewed by refworld.com. You can read a brief extract of the interview below:

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I got into refereeing by going along to a local course after seeing an FA recruitment poster at a local sports club.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

2008 Play Off Semi-Final 2nd Leg – Rochdale v Darlington. The sell out crowd made for an excellent atmosphere.

What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?

To constantly improve through hard work and listening to advice

What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Referee?

High level of physical fitness to keep up with play, being mentally strong so that you can remain calm in pressure situations and learn from each game.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

My wife and children for being so supportive, two local referees, Darren Bond and Peter Gooch for their support and friendship over the years and Eddie Wolstenholme for giving up so much of his time to help me develop.

13-04-2009 – Millwall 2-0 Posh – League One – Andy Woolmer ordered a penalty to be taken 3 times against Posh!! “It’s a sickener that I saved two penalties and neither counted. The ref wouldn’t even tell me why. The linesman told me it was because I had come off the line. I got the feeling they wouldn’t be happy until Millwall had scored. I wondered if it was worth diving for the third. Had I saved that they probably would have made them take it again. It’s the first time I’ve ever been pulled up at a penalty – and that includes youth football. I don’t think I did anything wrong.” – Joe Lewis.
